Uncover the Hidden Triggers: 3 Surprising Factors That Could Be Fueling Your Migraines

The sun is shining, and temperatures are rising. As we welcome the warmer months, many of us are focused on staying cool and comfortable. But there’s another important factor to consider: a higher-than-usual risk of migraine headaches.

New Research Reveals Surprising Triggers

According to new research published in the journal Neurology, three lesser-known factors can trigger migraines: air pollution, temperature (including UV exposure), and humidity. The study followed 7,032 people living in Israel for about a decade who suffered from migraines, tracking daily exposure to air pollution, weather conditions, and hospital or clinic visits.

The Findings

The researchers discovered a link between these weather-related factors and migraine. They found that:

  • Air pollution was associated with a higher risk of migraine: people exposed to high levels of nitrogen dioxide (a common pollutant from traffic exhaust) were 41% more likely to visit a hospital or clinic for migraine symptoms.
  • High temperatures and low humidity appear to be linked to more migraine headaches, likely because they amplify the effect of nitrogen dioxide.

The Science Behind It

Air pollution can spark neuroinflammation (the immune system’s inflammatory response in the brain and spinal cord), which is a risk factor for migraine. This may cause a release of pain chemicals like calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P that can lead to a migraine.

Heat can also impact blood vessels and nerves, irritating them and triggering a migraine. Additionally, dehydration caused by heat can trigger migraines in some individuals.

The Role of Humidity

High humidity common in the spring and summer can also trigger migraines. This is because high humidity causes you to sweat and lose water, which can decrease the amount of blood in your blood vessels (if you don’t replace it), leading to headaches.

Migraine Triggers: Common and Uncommon

According to the US National Library of Medicine, some common migraine triggers include:

  • Foods and ingredients like MSG, aspartame, citrus fruits, and chocolate
  • Environmental factors like bright lights, loud noises, and changes in temperature or humidity

However, air pollution, heat, and humidity can be difficult to avoid. To mitigate the effects of these triggers, experts recommend:

  • Wearing a face mask like an N95 when outdoors during peak pollution times
  • Keeping windows shut and running an air purifier indoors
  • Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and electrolyte-rich beverages

Empowering Patients with Migraine

The key to managing migraines is understanding your triggers. By keeping a headache diary, tracking pollution levels, and making lifestyle changes, you can take control of your migraines and reduce their frequency and severity.

As Dr. Ghafoor says, “Knowing and identifying migraine triggers is very important. It’s empowering the patient to understand their disease.”
