While these initiatives succeeded in reaching large audiences, the investigators noted only modest gains in knowledge and even smaller shifts in actual behavior.

“Most prevention research has focused on the individual, which is valuable but costly and hard to scale,” said Mario Siervo, PhD, professor of human nutrition at Curtin University and senior author of the study. “Population‑level campaigns can reach whole communities at once. Despite strong interest in this approach, no one had yet brought the evidence together to ask whether these campaigns actually work.”

The analysis showed that, on average, awareness rose by a few percentage points after a campaign, but only a minority of participants altered habits such as diet, exercise, or sleep. Siervo emphasized that even a small change across a whole population could be meaningful, yet the data suggest current strategies fall short of that potential.

Interactive programs show stronger results

Programs that combined a personalized risk assessment with structured education produced the most notable improvement. Over three years, participants in these combined interventions reduced their modifiable risk factor score by about 26 percent. By contrast, passive information campaigns yielded far smaller behavior changes.

“People change when they are actively engaged, not simply informed,” Siervo explained. “The most effective interventions combined a personalised risk assessment with structured education.” The study’s authors recommend that clinicians and health professionals emphasize both the possibility of prevention and concrete steps individuals can take.

These observations point to a broader challenge: turning information into habit. The study suggests that merely telling people what is risky does not replace the need for partnership and support in changing daily routines.

From a policy perspective, the findings imply that investments in large‑scale, passive campaigns may need to be rebalanced toward more interactive, community‑based models. Such a shift could help bridge the gap between awareness and sustained lifestyle modification.

Dr. Manisha Parulekar of Hackensack University Medical Center advocated embedding online education, individualized risk assessments, and community programs into standard care. She stressed that such services must be culturally relevant and cost‑effective to reach diverse populations.

The study’s authors acknowledge that more work is needed to assess the long‑term scalability of these personalized approaches. They propose future research to explore cost‑effective delivery models and to investigate additional factors, such as muscle strength and body composition, that may influence dementia risk.
