Patient care in Manchester could see notable improvements through a new partnership between the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). The agreement aims to create a Manchester Sandbox, a setting where innovative technologies can be trialed inside real NHS environments.

The initial phase will concentrate on AI-enabled medical devices. These tools are designed to spot patients who face a higher risk of complications from chronic conditions, allowing clinicians to intervene earlier and tailor treatment more effectively.

The MHRA explains that the initiative tackles a major challenge in health-care innovation: learning how new technologies behave in everyday clinical practice. By bringing regulators, health-care providers, and innovators together early, the sandbox seeks to streamline development and reduce uncertainty.

Lawrence Tallon, Chief Executive of the MHRA, points out that AI and emerging technologies hold great promise for enhancing patient outcomes. He adds that it is important to understand how these tools operate in practice and where they can deliver the most benefit.

Beyond testing devices, the programme will also explore regulatory approaches that can adapt to the evolving needs of the health system. Insights gathered will be shared across the NHS, helping to promote broader adoption of solutions that demonstrate real value.

Mark Cubbon, Chief Executive of MFT, stresses that patients should receive the advantages of innovation as soon as possible while safety remains a top priority. He notes that the collaboration brings essential partners together early, allowing them to assess what works and how new technologies perform in authentic health-care settings.

A roundtable is scheduled for later this year, gathering regulators, health-care providers, innovators, researchers, as well as patient and public representatives. The MHRA will also invite medical-device developers to express interest in joining the next stage of the project.
